These trees have been gleaned from tree removal projects in Bulgaria, Eastern Europe, according to sustainable felling planned years ahead, so none of the trees we use are cut down for the purpose of making our furniture.
Burning wood for preservation have been done for centuries in Japan. They call it Shou Sugi Ban. The process involves charring the wood, cooling it, cleaning it, impregnating and finishing it with with several coats of a water-based products that brings out their beauty and adds protection. All charred parts are sealed and strengthened with coats of finish, to ensure that nothing peels off or leave a stain. The bottom part of the trunk is specially treated to protect the surface you put it on. NO harsh toxic chemicals have been applied in order to maintain the environmentally friendly quality and natural freshness of the wood. Although time consuming, the final product is not only gorgeous, with its rich, silvery finish; the charred wood also resists fire, rot, insects, and can last up to 80 years.
The pieces show some natural cracks and holes. As with any furniture of this kind, cracks and splitting are possible as the wood continues to dry. This is a normal process as the wood fully dries out but it adds to the personality of each one of a kind stump.
Due to the natural wood used, no two pieces are alike. These photos represent the shape and size of the tree trunk you will receive. Every wood table may have various random naturally occurring cracks, knots and color variations
